The Plan

This one’s for the GunplaForJoy Colorado Q2 Group Build β€” and the theme is Delivery Service.

The concept: a Zaku II MS-06S that’s been quietly repurposed as a civilian delivery unit. On the surface, it’s just doing its job β€” hauling packages, running routes, keeping things moving. But look closer and you’ll see a machine that never really left the battlefield. The pilot is a Zeon veteran who’s biding his time, and this Zaku reflects that energy β€” professional enough to pass inspection, dangerous enough to win a war.

The build will lean heavily on 30 Minutes Missions option parts for the kitbash:

  • Option Parts Set 5 β€” wing/booster unit for atmospheric flight and package delivery runs
  • Option Parts Set 8 β€” multi-backpack as the primary cargo compartment (and weapons cache)
  • Option Parts Set 10 β€” propellant tanks and boosters for extended range and fuel capacity

The goal is a Zaku that tells a story without saying a word.

Build Log

Long week. The kind where the days blur together and home feels further away than the miles actually are. I didn’t have a ton of time once I got back, but I needed to get in the shop β€” even for a few minutes. Tonight’s mission: figure out how to mount the 30 Minute Missions backpack to the Zaku.

Two non-negotiables. First, the connection has to be rock solid β€” no wobble, no flex. Second, it has to come off cleanly when needed, so permanent bonding was never on the table. The solution I landed on: salvage part of the stock rocket pack, sand it flat, and build it up with PLA Plate to create a reliable interface. Sanding happens tonight. The build-up starts tomorrow.

Sanded flat with 120 grit
120 grit knocked it down to a flat surface.
Clean flat interface for hose attachment
A solid interface β€” hoses will attach just like they should.
Pack base ready for PLA Plate build-up and drilling
Next up: PLA Plate build-up and drilling so the 30 Minute Missions backpack can seat properly.

Finally getting going on the Q2 Gunpla Colorado group build. I’m excited to see how this comes out. Today I snap built the Zaku and option parts kits.

I’m not paying too much attention to nub marks because I’ll go over the model after it’s together to determine what I need to clean up…no use spending time on nub marks that nobody will see.

The build is easy for this guy, but the skirt options are weird…one hard plastic and one flexible rubbery plastic. I think I actually like the flexible one but I’m not sure it’s going to like being painted.

A couple hours is all it took to put this guy together β€” overall I’m pretty excited about his articulation. It was a fun build for a HG kit.

Option Parts Set 5 β€” Multi-Wing/Booster

This set is going to add a “Wing” type gimmick to the kit. Enabling improved long distance flight while in atmosphere, this will allow the Zaku to be much better at his delivery job.

Option Parts Set 8 β€” Multi-Backpack

This pack will carry his packages for delivery, but also hold his hidden weapons cache…ya know…just in case another war breaks out.

Option Parts Set 10 β€” Large Propellant Tank

All these deliveries require a lot of extra fuel…or so it seems…maybe there is something dangerous hiding inside these “tanks.”

Next step…figuring out how to bash these parts together.

The haul is in. Picked up the HG Zaku II MS-06S along with three 30 Minutes Missions option parts kits to fuel the kitbash β€” a wing/booster set, a multi-backpack, and a propellant tank kit. The concept is locked in and I’m already seeing how these pieces are going to come together. Time to get to work.
